Penn State Harrisburg Senior Instructor in Engineering AB Shafaye’s longstanding commitment to teaching and service will be formally honored on Feb. 21 when the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council presents him with its 2008 Technical Achievement Award.
Shafaye and other area residents will formally receive their awards at the annual Engineers Week Banquet at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill. The Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council is a nonprofit organization established to plan and implement the celebration of Engineers Week annually in the greater Harrisburg area. The council is made up of representatives from various engineering and technical societies in Central Pennsylvania.
The Technical Achievement Award recognizes an individual who is not a Registered Professional Engineer, but has made notable contributions to the engineering profession and its principles of practice. Shafaye is the second Penn State Harrisburg faculty member to earn the honor in the past three years. Director of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology Omid Ansary was presented the same honor in 2005.
A Middletown resident, Shafaye has been a faculty member in the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology since 1986, teaching a wide range of courses in its electrical engineering and electrical engineering technology programs.
A bachelor’s and master’s graduate of Southern Illinois University, he has most recently been involved with a funded program to utilize Tablet PCs for enhanced learning in the electrical engineering curriculum and for the past 15 years has developed labs and instructional materials for a number of digital logic design and related courses. His areas of interest include digital systems, control systems, microcontrollers, data communications, and wind power.
He has served on numerous University and college committees and is currently the chair of the Penn State Harrisburg Faculty Senate Student Affairs Committee.
A tireless advocate of volunteerism and professional activities, Shafaye is a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honors society and is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), currently serving as Region 2 Central Area Chair. At Penn State Harrisburg, he has served as adviser to the IEEE student branch for 20 years. He has also served in a variety of leadership roles for IEEE’s Susquehanna Section.
