$2,500 stipends available to Harrisburg Semester students

March 20, 2008

Several stipends of $2,500 each are available to undergraduate students who enroll in the summer Harrisburg Semester program offered through Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Public Affairs.

Deadline for application to the program and for the financial assistance is April 15.

"The college has committed financing through the Cliff Jones Program Fund for Good Government to help support worthy students from throughout Pennsylvania enrolled in the Harrisburg Semester program," said school Director Steven A. Peterson.

Funding to create The Cliff Jones Fund, named in honor of the longtime Penn State Harrisburg advocate who served four Pennsylvania governors in cabinet positions, was initiated a year ago to financially assist students in the Harrisburg Semester program which he helped create.

A combined internship and seminar focused around policymaking in the state capital, Harrisburg Semester provides educational and professional experience in the workings of state government along with community development-related organizations and agencies. The 3-credit Leadership in Public Service Seminar is part of the program with the added opportunity for participants to earn internship credit.

By participating in the internship program, students gain real-life experience while working in state government, a policy advocacy association, a lobbying or public affairs firm, journalism, or a community development organization.
