When the Capital Region Forensic Unit conducted its annual swearing-in and recognition ceremonies on campus recently, the program included a surprise expression of gratitude to Penn State Harrisburg Director of Safety and Police Services Kevin Stoehr.

As part of the opening remarks to the meeting, Forensic Unit Team Leader Dennis Woodring from the Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division presented Stoehr with a certificate of appreciation for his and the college’s continued support.

The forensic unit is made up of officers from departments in Cumberland and Dauphin counties who are all sworn as detectives by the respective district attorneys. The members are called on to process major crime scenes for homicides, suspicious deaths, officer-related shootings, and more serious crimes such as armed robberies and burglaries.

The team was created by officers more than 20 years ago with the aim to process crime scenes more efficiently through the use of shared personnel and resources. The team has grown to become a model forensic unit for the Commonwealth.

The newest members of the unit were sworn in by Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed and Fran Chardo from the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office.
