College offering Food Safety Certification training

One supervisory employee in a licensed food establishment must be certified in food safety and sanitation in order to be in compliance with the state’s Department of Agriculture Food Employee Certification Act.

Penn State Harrisburg is bringing courses that fulfill those requirements to Carlisle, Lebanon, Middletown, and New Bloomfield this fall.

The Statewide Food Safety Training is designed for food service managers, chefs, caterers, health officials, and inspectors. It is an outreach program of the College of Agriculture Sciences’ Department of Food Science, the Division of Continuing Education, and Penn State Cooperative Extension.

Course topics include: the sanitation challenge; the flow of food through the operation, food safety management systems, facilities, and pest management; and food safety regulations and employee training. The formats range from 16-hour classroom to 8 hours of classroom and 8 hours of home study.

The schedules and locations include:

Carlisle – Monday, Oct. 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; exam, Friday, Oct. 31, 8 to 10 a.m.; Penn State Cooperative Extension, Cumberland County.

Lebanon – Tuesday, Nov. 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 25, 9 to 11 a.m.; exam, Tuesday, Nov. 25, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Penn State Cooperative Extension, Lebanon County.

Middletown – Wednesday, Oct. 8 and Wednesday, Oct. 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; exam, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 8 to 10 a.m., Penn State Harrisburg Educational Activities Building.

Middletown – Chinese Language Class – Tuesday, Oct. 7, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., exam and review, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1 to 5 p.m., Penn State Harrisburg Educational Activities Building.

New Bloomfield – Monday, Oct. 27 and Monday, Nov. 3, 8 a.m. to noon; exam and review, Monday, Nov. 10, 8 a.m. to noon, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Perry County.
