Penn State Harrisburg offers a post-baccalaureate certification program at the secondary level in the areas of English, mathematics and social studies (Citizenship Education or Social Sciences). The certification program is designed for an individual who holds a baccalaureate degree and wants to become certified to teach in Pennsylvania secondary schools (grades 7-12). The program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Course work required for the certification program may take as many as four semesters for completion, and includes courses in both education and the academic content area. The number of courses required in the content area would depend on previous coursework that may be transferable to satisfy content area course requirements. All certification candidates must complete a semester-long student teaching experience. Courses required for certification may not be used to complete requirements for a Masters Degree, and many (particularly education courses) are offered during the day rather than in the evening because of the integration of course work and field placement experiences in local school districts.

Admission requirements for the program include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, six credits in college level math, three credits in college level English composition and three 3 credits in English or American Literature. Final course grades for the required math and English courses must be "C" or above. Also, applicants must have passed the three tests (Reading, Writing and Mathematics) that comprise the PRAXIS I series published by the Educational Testing Service. Registration and testing information is available online at http://www.ets.org/praxis.

To apply for admission into the teacher certification program, click on the graduate application link and choose degree application. In the box "Graduate Degree Sought," write "Teacher Certification." In the box "Graduate Major (Program) Sought," write the subject area in which you wish to become certified (i.e. English, mathematics, or social studies).
