Pretest: Distributed August 29, 2008
Dates: Students need to attend only 1 of the following 2-day sessions
Session 1 - Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7, 2008
Session 2 - Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, 2008
Times: Saturday, 9: 15 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 1:15-6:30 p.m.
Posttest: Immediately following respective workshop, Sunday, 6:30 p.m.

Curriculum Requirement
Students enrolled in H ADM/P ADM 503 Research Methods are required to enroll in the Applied Statistical Package workshop unless they can prove they have the SPSS skills that will be required in the course. A pretest will be given for those who feel confident they are proficient in the required skills and wish to forego taking H ADM/P ADM 8486. The instructor will discuss the pretest scheduling and other workshop details during the first day of the Research Methods class.
Workshop Overview
Increasingly, organizations expect employees to incorporate data-driven
analysis into daily decisions, long-range planning, and organizational
operations. Applied Statistical Package for Health Administrators and
Public Administrators is an intensive two-day noncredit workshop
designed to enable students to gain the knowledge and skills required to
run a computerized statistical analysis package: SPSS.

Topics
- Preparing raw data for statistical analysis, including entering
the data, naming variables, adding labels, creating composite
variables using mathematical or logical statements, and more
- Importing data from spreadsheets and databases for statistical
analysis
- Preparing charts and graphs from SPSS data
- Selecting subsets of data for separate analyses
- Converting SPSS analysis output into “presentation” formats for
inclusion in reports, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
- Saving an SPSS data file, so that it can be recalled many times
for further analysis
Continuing Education Units
Penn State has approved this workshop for 1.2 Continuing Education
Units (CEUs). The CEU is based on a standard of one unit per ten hours of
classroom contact. Upon successful completion of the program posttest,
each participant will be awarded a certificate verifying the CEUs earned.
Costs
The registration fee is $249. The required text for the course is SPSS for
Windows Step-by-Step: A Simple Guide and Reference, 16.0 Update 9/E, by
Darren George and Paul Mallery and published by Allyn & Bacon, ISBN
0205661335. This book is scheduled for release in July and also will be used in the Research Methods class. Version 15.0 of the text will be used if this book is not released as scheduled. This course will require a Penn State computer Access Account (user ID and password). If you indicate on the registration form that you do not have an Access Account, a temporary one will be created for you.
Registration and Payment
Registration deadline is Thursday, September 4. The fee may be paid by
check, request to bill employer, or VISA or MasterCard. Students may
request a payment plan (paid in full during fall 2007) by contacting Linda
Conrad at 717-948-6517 or ltc1@psu.edu. A confirmation letter will be
e-mailed to students whose registrations are received by Thursday,
January 24.. Please include your e-mail address on your registration form.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course
because of insufficient enrollment or for other unforeseen circumstances.
If a program is cancelled, registrants will be notified by telephone or
e-mail, and refunds processed. Please provide a daytime phone number
for this purpose. A 100% refund will be made only if the student’s
written notice of cancellation is received in the Continuing Education
office by Tuesday, September 2. There are no refunds after that date, but
substitutes are welcome.
