Purpose

The Keystone Health Promotion Conference is a state-wide conference designed for school health educators, school nurses, community health educators, worksite health promotion practitioners, and other advocates of health promotion.

The intent of HLHED 596 Individual Studies: Enhancing Health Promotion in Your Organization (3 credits) is to provide conference participants with the opportunity to synthesize the conference experience into their workplace health promotion activities.

Objectives

  • Recognize the role that the lifestyle plays in determining personal health status
  • Participate in a "wellness" experience and reflect on individual lifestyle practices that affect health
  • Identify strategies to enhance professional health education competency

Course Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
  • Register for and attend the Keystone Health Promotion Conference, June 17-19, 2008 at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA
  • Attend an orientation meeting at the conference on June 17
  • Attend all keynote addresses, workshop sessions, teambuilding activities, and the health fair
  • Submit a scholarly paper by July 18, 2008

Scholarly Paper

Due July 18, 2008 (Points will be deducted for papers that are submitted late.)

The intent of the scholarly paper is to present a practical summary of your conference experiences that can synthesize with your organization's health. Each keynote address and workshop you attend and organize you paper in the following headings:

Keynote Address and Concurrent Session Review
(30 points)

Provide a synopsis of all keynote addresses, the health fair, and the workshop sessions and teambuilding activities you attend. You should emphasize session highlights, key insights, and new information.

Implications for Health Education
(40 points)

Describe how the keynote addresses and workshop content will enhance your professional competency related to health education. Emphasize how you can integrate workshop content into your school or organization's health education effort. Discuss how you can work with other teachers, staff, administrators, and parents. Integrate your comments with some of the ideas expressed in the article you will receive at the conference.

Personal Health Reflections
(15 points)

One purpose of the Keystone Health Conference is to raise awareness about healthy lifestyle behaviors. Provide a summary of overall conference experiences such as meals, exercise programs, and daily messages, and how they may impact you own health practices.

Action Plan
(15 points)

Summarize an action that would describe how health promotion activities could be implemented in your school or organization.

100 Points total:
A = 90-100 points
B = 80-89 points
C = 70-79 points
D = 60-69 points

General Information

Tuition
The University reserves the right to revise tuition and fees without further notice.

$1,743 (3 Credits, PA resident)

Information Technology Fee
$53 (1-4 Credits)

The purpose of this fee is to support unrestricted student access to University computing facilities, electronic mail, World Wide Web, and key information services. This nonrefundable fee is assessed to all students according to the highest number of credits taken in a semester. If credits are dropped, no refund is available.

Registration and Payment

Complete the registration form and submit it by Friday, June 13, 2008 with your payment in the form of check, money order, *employer authorized billing, VISA, or MasterCard.

*Employer Authorized Billing: The Bursar will bill an employer in response to a request on organizational overhead stating the student's name, Penn State ID number, and tuition and fees billable. Letters containing academic performance conditions will not be accepted.

Walk in and register at the Enrollment Services/Academic Records Office, Swatara Building, then pay tuition at the Bursar's Office. Office hours are: 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Monday and Thursday; 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
