Overview

This course is designed to teach students in grades 9-12 how to effectively apply new strategies to prepare for the comprehensive SAT exam. It will examine and discuss strategic approaches and methodical processes for the critical reading, writing, and math sections through lecture, interactive class discussion, and engaging activities. Each area will include application exercises and practice exams, as well as a writing assessment for the essay component. A personalized curriculum will meet the needs of each student.

  • Short and long passages exam/review exam; SAT vocabulary: application and focus/practice; writing section: introduction, overview, and strategy application - identifying sentence errors, improving sentences, and paragraphs
  • Writing section exam - comprehensive exam/review exam; essay section: introduction, overview, and strategy application/components - position, examples, organization, and grammar; writing prompts: practice; writing sample
  • Review writing sample; essay practice; math section: introduction, overview, and strategy application - numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, and data/probability/statistics; math drills: practice; math assignment

Schedule and Location

The New SAT Exam Prep Course will be offered twice during the spring 2008 semester. Each course will meet six consecutive Saturdays, 8:30 a.m.-Noon, in the Educational Activities Building at Penn State Harrisburg in Middletown.
Section 001: Saturdays, February 2, 9, 16, 23; March 1, and 8
Section 002: Saturdays, March 15, 22, 29; April 5, 12, and 19

Instructor

Robin Thal has four years’ experience teaching SAT Prep, College Prep, and Reading, Writing, and Math curriculums at Sylvan Learning Center and recently taught an SAT Exam Prep Course for Kids College at Penn State Harrisburg. She has an M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum with Reading Specialist and Writing Specialization Certification from Penn State Harrisburg.
