Recent Changes in Communication Major

Two important curriculum changes have occurred in the Communications Program. The first is a slight change in the requirements for the major. The second is a change in the numbering of Communications courses. These changes will become fully effective in Spring 2008. These changes should not have any adverse effect on your study plan or graduation schedule. Please consult your adviser if you have any questions about how any of these changes affects you.

  1. CHANGES IN REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR

Students entering the program from Spring 2008 onward will not be required to take Visual and Video Editing. Instead, they will have to choose two visual communications courses  from a list of six courses which include:

COMM 215(3) Basic Photography, COMM 241(3) Graphic Design, COMM 363(3)Desktop Publishing, COMM 371(4) Visual and Video Editing, COMM 415 Advanced Photography(3), COMM 441(3)Advanced Graphic Design, COMM 482(4) Advanced Communications Workshop.

NOTE: This change does not apply to students admitted to the program before Spring 2008

  1. CHANGES IN COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM

Beginning  Spring 2008, as part of the University-wide uniform course review, Communications courses in all Penn State campuses will have their course numbers changed to begin with the prefix COMM. As a result of this review, many of Penn State Harrisburg's courses will also have their course numbers changed. Two courses will  be completely replaced: COMMS 231W Journalistic Writing becomes COMM 260W News Writing; and COMMS 435 Advanced Reporting becomes COMM 474 Depth Reporting.

These change will not affect your graduation plans as your degree audit will simply replace the the old course numbers with the new course numbers and names beginning Spring 2008.

Below is a complete list of these changes.
