The Communications Minor    

 

Requirements for the Minor

 

1. Description

 

The Communications minor provides students with an introduction to the skills needed to function as a professional communicator, as well as a basic understanding of communication processes and theory.  Students seeking careers in fields such as public administration, business, criminal justice, law, information technology, and the medical, social and behavioral professions will find this minor provides instruction in a valuable additional knowledge and skill area important in today’s information society.

 

Students must apply for entrance to the minor after achieving fifth semester classification. A grade of ‘C’ or better is required for all courses to complete the minor.

 

2.  Total number of credits required for the minor: 18

 

3.  Arrangement of courses along with recommended scheduling pattern:

 

 

PRESCRIBED COURSES: 3 credits

COMM 251 (3) The Nature of Media  (Sem: 3-6)

                                 

ADDITIONAL COURSES: 3 credits

Select either COMM 230W Writing for Media (3) or COMM 231W Journalistic Writing (3) (Sem: 3-6)

 

SUPPORTING COURSES AND RELATED AREAS: 12-15 credits 

Select 4 additional courses from an Approved Department List (Please refer to Section D) to be taken during semesters 6 through 8. At least two of these courses must be at the 400-level (Sem: 2-8)

Transfer students may have approved communication courses from other institutions apply to the minor, with permission of the School Director or Program Coordinator.
