Master’s Paper Layout Specifications
If a guide is needed, the standard specifications for a M.S. thesis established by the Graduate School in the Thesis Guide are recommended. Otherwise, the following specifications can be used -

Margins
Left margin (binding side) must be 1-1/2". The other three sides are to be 1". All type should fit within this 6" x 9" area.

Spacing
Use standard double-spacing in the text (3 lines per inch). Single-spacing or line-and-a-half spacing is allowed in table of contents, block quotations, headings, tables, figure captions, and appendices. Extra space is required around major headings. Be sure that spacing is consistent. Begin each chapter on a new page.

Typing
Use a standard typeface of 10-, 11-, or 12- point size. You may use 10 or 12 pitch. Nine-point may be used within tables, figures, and appendices. Do not use italics except for foreign words, genus/species names, book and journal titles, and special emphasis.
Indent paragraphs in a consistent manner, i.e., tab of 4 or 5 spaces. Type must be on one side of the page only. Consistently dark print is a must, preferably from a laser printer.

Pagination
Preferably in upper right hand corner (number only). Sequence is to be as follows -

  1. Title page beginning with the small Roman numeral I. No numbers should show on title or signature page.
  2. Text should begin with Arabic number I and continue through the Bibliography, References, and Appendices.
  3. Tables - Titles on top; Arabic numbers.
  4. Figures - Titles on bottom; Arabic numbers.
