Student Assistant Job Descriptions

Circulation:

  • Assist patrons at the circulation desk—charge out books, help patrons locate materials, answer questions, and explain the library lending code to patrons.
  • Answer phones.
  • Discharge and shelve returned items.
  • Assist patrons in the use of computers, copiers, microform, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Shelf reading and shifting projects.
  • Photocopy and filing duties.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Some lifting and manual dexterity required.

Periodicals:

  • Assist patrons at the periodicals desk—charge out periodicals, help patrons locate materials, answer questions.
  • Answer phones.
  • Assist patrons in the use of computers, copiers, microform, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Check in and shelve returned materials.
  • Photocopy and filing duties.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Some lifting and manual dexterity required.

Public Services/Special Collections:

  • Assist patrons in special collections—help patrons locate materials, answer questions.
  • Respond to requests by remote users.
  • Answer phones.
  • Assist with the development of research guides.
  • Assist with collection maintenance.
  • Photocopy and filing duties.
  • Assist with special projects.
  • Some lifting and manual dexterity required.

Library Graduate Assistant:

  • Assist patrons at the reference desk—explain use of print and electronic reference resources, help patrons locate materials, answer questions.
  • Answer phones.
  • Assist patrons in the use of computers, copiers, microform, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Assist with collection maintenance.
  • Photocopy and filing duties.
  • Assist librarians with special projects in all areas of public services.
  • Some lifting and manual dexterity required.
