GLORIA CLOUSER,

services, PATRICK HALL, associate librarian for
public affairs, GAIL HOSSLER, public services/periodicals
assistant, ALAN MAYS, microcomputer systems consultant
(electronic services assistant), GAIL NEWCOMER,
technical services assistant, BARBARA NOLT, technical
services assistant, CAROLEE ROMAN, head of technical
services, FAY YOUNGMARK, circulation supervisor,
and EILEEN ZAGON, catalog librarian, attended a
workshop, titled "A Dialogue on Diversity for Faculty, Staff, and
Students," which was sponsored by the Capital College Diversity
and Equity Committee, on January 30 at Penn State Harrisburg. Dr.
W. Terrell Jones, Vice Provost for Educational Equity, who was the
facilitator and guest speaker for the workshop, gave a presentation
on the topic, "The Journey from Diversity Awareness to Celebration."
Gloria, Gail Hossler, Alan, Fay, and BRENDA LUTTRELL,
public services/stacks maintenance assistant, also attended the
Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania Fall Meeting
Program, "The Millennials: A Perspective on America's Next Generation
and Their Impact on Higher Education," which was held at Harrisburg
Area Community College on October 18, 2002.
GREGORY CRAWFORD, head of public services, served as acting director of the Capital College Libraries during the spring 2003 semester while Director Harold Shill was on sabbatical. Greg presented a workshop, "Water Plant Operators Utilizing Computers," for the Small Public Water Systems Technology Assistance Center, on November 19, 2002. Greg's review of Distinguished Native American Spiritual Practitioners and Healers, by Troy R. Johnson, appeared in RUSQ 42, no. 2 (2002): 169. ERIC DELOZIER, electronic services librarian, participated in a panel discussion on the future of technology at the fall meeting of the Penn State Campus College Libraries, on October 11, 2002, at University Park. His presentation was titled "The Future: Technology to Come for the PC." On November 8, 2002, Eric traveled to Philadelphia to lead a meeting of the Philadelphia Regional Chapter of the Medical Library Association Board of Directors. Eric is currently serving as chapter chair. Afterward, Eric attended the chapter's fall program, titled "Communicating with Physicians." PATRICK HALL, associate librarian for public affairs, recently submitted two articles for publication. One article, "Not All Sources Are Created Equal: Student Research, Source Equivalence, and the Internet," will appear in the Internet Reference Services Quarterly, and the other, "Developing Research Skills in African American Students: Some Field Notes," is scheduled for publication in the May 2003 edition of the Journal of Academic Librarianship. During the fall 2002 semester, Pat was named to the Penn State Libraries Scholarship Committee, which reviews and selects recipients for the University Libraries scholarships. HENRY KORETZKY, periodicals assistant, accompanied Long Island singer-songwriter Martha Trachtenberg on mandolin at an International Bluegrass Music Association's songwriter showcase in Louisville, Ky., on October 15, 2002. Henry attended the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference in Monticello, N.Y., from November 15 to 17, 2002, where he accompanied singer-songwriters Mary Sue Twohy of Takoma Park, Md., and Robert Bobby of Wrightsville, Pa., at their showcase performances. He ushered in 2003 by playing a New Year's Eve contradance in Chatham, N.J., with the Gnu-Tones, and he performed with multi-instrumentalist Ken Gehret on March 26, 2003, during the Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, Pa. Henry's article, "Night Falls on Sunset Park," about a country music park in West Grove, Pa., appeared in the January 2003 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited. ALAN MAYS, microcomputer systems consultant (electronic services assistant), and FAY YOUNGMARK, circulation supervisor, attended a program, titled "How Difficult Can This Be? Understanding Learning Disabilities," at Penn State Harrisburg on November 18, 2002. The program was part of an educational video series presentation sponsored by the Capital College Diversity and Equity Committee in conjunction with the Office of Disability Services. GLENN S. McGUIGAN, business reference librarian and reference librarian for behavioral sciences, presented a paper, "Approaches to Library Instruction in Business" with co-presenter Michael Oppenheim of UCLA at the Business Librarianship 101 Workshop sponsored by the Business and Reference Services Section (BRASS), a unit of the American Library Association (ALA), at the ALA Midwinter Conference, Philadelphia, Pa., January 24, 2003. Glenn contributed a chapter, titled "Employment Vacancies," to the publication, Help Wanted: Job and Career Information Resources, edited by Gary White, Chicago: RUSA Occasional Papers, no. 26 (2003): 38-43. Glenn's article, "The Evolution of Portable Electronic Books: Still a Work in Progress," was published in the Information Technology Newsletter 13, no. 2 (July-Dec. 2002): 25-27. Glenn was invited to deliver a lecture, titled "The Structure and Packaging of Business Information," to the Special Libraries Association Student Chapter of Clarion University, in Harrisburg, Pa., on November 23, 2002. "The Search for Company and Industry Information" was the topic of a workshop Glenn presented on Nov 8, 2002, at Penn State Shenango, Sharon, Pa., for Penn State librarians from the western campuses. He was also recently appointed to Penn State Harrisburg's Circulation Appeals Committee and to the Faculty and Staff Development Campaign for Penn State Harrisburg as the library's faculty representative. HAROLD B. SHILL, director of the Capital College Libraries, is on sabbatical leave from January 1 to June 30, 2003, to study the impact of new and improved facilities on academic library usage. He has been awarded a University Libraries Research Grant to support this research project. Hal attended the American Library Association Midwinter Conference in January 2003 in Philadelphia and the PALINET Fall 2002 Conference in Harrisburg. Hal was appointed to the Buildings for College Libraries and Library Projects Directory committees of the American Library Association's Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) division. He also serves as a member of the LAMA Facility Planners Discussion Group. On March 21, 2003, he gave a presentation, "So You Built It--Did They Come?," at the Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania (ACLCP) Spring Conference in Grantsville, Pa. He presented a paper, "Does the Building Really Matter? Facility Improvements and Academic Library Usage," at the Association of College and Research Libraries 11th National Conference in Charlotte, N.C., on April 12, 2003. He serves on the ACLCP Executive Committee as immediate past president of the association. FAY YOUNGMARK, circulation supervisor, traveled to University Park on June 6, 2002, to participate in a meeting with Margaret Pelfrey, SIRSI consultant, and Cathy Jones, SIRSI product coordinator, regarding Access Services issues. |
