In the mid 1960s, the Mechanical Design Engineering Technology (MDET) program was initiated at Penn State Harrisburg.  It was intended that the program introduce methods and subject matters appropriate to produce graduates who would be immediately productive for the industry.

In the 1970s need for thermal energy related studies became important.  Furthermore, it was necessary to permit a better fit with the various Associate Degree programs, particularly the ones from the Penn State Commonwealth campuses across the state.  To respond to these needs, changes in the curriculum were undertaken and finally in the mid 1980s, the program name was changed from MDET to MET; the word ‘Design’ was eliminated.

The program has been continuously updated throughout the 80s and the 90s and in the Fall of 2003, the program for the first time admitted first-year students. The change from upper-division courses only to a full four-year program meant introduction of a few courses new to campus, improvement of lab facilities, especially for the introduction to engineering course, and increased advising support for first- and second-year students. The students in the MET program has access to excellent computing, classroom and laboratory facilities.
